Q: Will all applicants be notified whether or not they have been awarded a Proton OnSite Scholarship? A: No. Only the winner(s) will be notified. Q: Will I still be eligible for the scholarship if I decide to delay starting college for a year or if I take off a year for non-academic activities during the time I am enrolled in school? A: No. The scholarship is intended for students who plan to attend four consecutive years of college starting the year the scholarship is awarded. To be eligible to receive scholarship funds in future years, as stated in the Rules and Guidelines, the student must have met the minimum academic requirements during the previous academic year. If there is no academic record, the scholarship becomes void from failure to meet the requirements for eligibility. Q: Can you guarantee confidentiality for submitted letters of recommendation? That is, the student should never be able to see any letters regardless of whether or not they win a scholarship. A: Yes, confidentiality is guaranteed. Q: Would you prefer I submit my application and other materials all at once, or separately? A: The paper Application Packet must be submitted all at once and in order, and you must provide FIVE (5) 3-hole punched and bound copies. Download the Application Packet Instructions to learn more. Q: I was wondering if I could submit more than 2 essays. Would I be disqualified or given extra points? A: You are welcome to submit more than two essays. If you do, the fact that you submitted more than what's required is unlikely to help you gain favor with the review panel (you will not be given extra points); however, if you think the additional essay(s) will allow the reviewers to get a better sense of who you are and why you're qualified for the scholarship, you're welcome to submit it. Your choice. Q: If I mail everything in the same envelope how will I know when/if all my information has been received? A: If you're concerned that your application won't arrive on time, please simply mail it early to allow enough time for the postal service to deliver it. You can also mail it as certified mail, which gives you options for tracking delivery. Q: How many scholarships will be awarded this year? A: We intend to award one 4-year scholarship (worth up to $100,000 for 4 years) although it is possible that more awards may be made based on the quality of the applicants.
Q: Is there a fee to apply? A: No, there is no fee to apply.
Q: I would like to have one or two people write a recommendation about my potential for a career in a science-related field (since you ask for at least one recommendation that satisfies this requirement). Is there a separate recommendation form for recommendations that do not discuss this? Or should I use the same form for all recommendations? A: You can use the same form for all recommendations. Q: How many people apply to this scholarship annually? A: In 2011, we had approximately 700 applicants. Q: What if my major is not listed on the application? A: Contact us to see if your major qualifies. Q: What do you mean by "need-based"? A: For the Proton OnSite Scholarship, financial need will be considered, but is not required for scholarship awards. The application asks for income information for you and your parents/guardians, however, this is only one of the criteria used to evaluate applicants. Significant emphasis is put on the other selection criteria listed in the Rules and Guidelines. Q: Can a citizen of a country other than the United States apply for this scholarship? (I have a great passion for engineering!) A:No. Unfortunately the Proton OnSite Scholarship Program is only open to U.S. citizens as stated in the rules:
